UP RI participates in the UP CHE 2019 Faculty Conference: Buhay/Bahay, There is No Place like Home: Towards a Sustainable College of Home Economics and Green Market Fair

Dr. Mahar Lagmay and Dr. Genaro Cuaresma, Executive Director and Institution Building Director, respectively, of the UP Resilience Institute (UP RI) participated in the UP College of Home Economics (CHE) 2019 Faculty Conference entitled “Buhay/Bahay, There is No Place like Home: Towards a Sustainable College of Home Economics.” This event, organized to celebrate the 98th anniversary of Home Economics as a discipline, aimed to explore ideas about how to create a more sustainable environment for the college while defining the microcosm of sustainability. The end goal was to make the college community of CHE inclusive, safe, and resilient.
Dr. Lagmay's talk on the" Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for the CHE Community"
Dr. Lagmay gave a talk on “Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for the CHE Community”. He presented the mandate, process model and organizational structure of Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) Plans, He also presented guidelines for several hazards like geophysical, hydro-meteorogical, biological among others. During the discussion of DRRM plans, topics such as disaster mitigation, preparation, response and rehabilitation/recovery were discussed. Dr. Lagmay also stressed the need for and the importance of preparing plans for each building in UP Diliman by showing the levels of vulnerability and proneness of the UP CHE building to disasters. Dr. Lagmay’s presentation also included a discussion about “SAFER-U: Safe and Resilient Universities Capacity Building Program.” A large part of his presentation centered on the need to have science-informed disaster resilience programs across all colleges in UP Diliman.
Dr. Lagmay received a Certificate of Appreciation from the CHE Faculty and the UP CHE received the 2 books from UP RI.
To conclude his talk, Dr. Lagmay presented the CHE with two books, “Hazard Assessment and Overlay Analysis of the University of the Philippines Diliman to Natural Hazards for Climate Change Adjusted Disaster Management” and “Sakunang Darating, Saklolo’y Tayo Rin,” which can be used as a guide in the formulation of their DRRM Plan.
Dr. Cuaresma offered his assistance in the formulation of DRRM Plan for the CHE Community.
Dr. Cuaresma also shared that he will assist colleges in UP Diliman in formulating the DRRM Plans. He also highlighted the need for Business Continuity Plan. Dr. Cuaresma also shared that the buildings in UP Los Banos Campus were all ready for disasters since they all have DRRM plans.
UP RI's booth in the SusCHEnable Green Market Fair
The UP CHE also organized a College Fair entitled SusCHEnable Green Market Fair at the Alonso Hall in UP Diliman. The fair was about promoting sustainability, safety, and disaster preparedness. The UP RI was one of the exhibitors in the fair. The UP RI presented a hazard map of the UP Campus and offered simple tutorials in using the NOAH Website. An audio visual presentation explaining the need for Open Data and Probabilistic Risk Assessment was also shown in the booth.
