UPRI Conducts a Rapid Assessment of the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS)

On July 15, 2024, UPRI’s team, led by IB Chief Science Research Specialist Jose Abraham C. Ongkiko, carried out a rapid assessment of the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) Building. The team included IB Junior Project Assistants Franklin Joshua G. Gali and Jonathan David M. Maligalig, with the assistance from NIGS Building Administrator Mr. Julius Pagaduan. This initiative is part of the collaborative efforts between UPRI and NIGS to improve disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) plans for the NIGS building.

The rapid assessment began with a brief introduction of the inspection procedures. The building administrator was interviewed about the emergency preparedness plan for the facility. The NIGS building, consisting of three floors, was thoroughly inspected starting from the first floor, moving to the second floor, and concluding in the basement.

After thorough inspection of the building, each floor and rooms has an evacuation plan. Additionally, fire extinguishers are properly placed and some of which have instructions on how to use them. That is a great help for individuals who don’t know how to use those.

The inspection that is conducted with the NIGS administrative staff was a successful and given that they request to conduct an emergency preparedness training for the to be knowledgeable in times of emergency.
