On April 29, 2024, One News PH interviewed UPRI to talk about the recent heat waves in the Philippines on a segment of their show called, The Big Story. The record-breaking heat waves of recent times was explained as a result of Global Warming giving way to a more extreme form known as “Global Boiling”. UPRI Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay explained that the era of Global Boiling is more of an evocative term to incite action from the people. Temperatures have been at their highest since the last 120,000 years, so the renaming of Global Warming to Global Boiling is intended to convey the sense of danger that it will pose, especially as the temperatures will only continue to rise in upcoming years such that heat waves, storms, typhoons, and storm surges will also become more common. The ultimate solution is Climate Change Mitigation, which is the reduction in the production of Greenhouse Gases that cause climate change and Climate Change Adaptation, which is planning for the adverse impacts of Climate Change. However, the Philippines is only a minor contributor to Greenhouse Gas Production, with the biggest producers being China, the US, and Europe. It is not enough that the Philippines change to green energy, but also to demand climate justice. The Philippines will be one of the hardest hit by climate change, and it will require help from the larger, more well developed nations, to mitigate Climate Change and reduce Greenhouse Gas production.
