Bionote: Dr. Mario Delos Reyes is a retired Professor, former Dean and currently a Professorial Lecturer at the University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP). At present, he is the Director of PASCAL (Placemaking and Social Capital and Learning) Centre for Asia-Pacific. Likewise, Prof. Delos Reyes is the President & CEO of the SEC-registered NGO, the Centre for Neighbourhood Studies (CeNS) Philippines. He led a team of UP experts who dedicated extensive efforts in the conduct of the research that led to the successful designation of Bohol Island as the first and only UNESCO Global Geopark in the Philippines. Dr. Delos Reyes co-authored a book titled, “Bohol – A Window to the Philippines’ Natural History Towards Sustainable Island Development”. He was awarded UP Scientist 3 for CY 2021-23, and received the Meritorious Public Service Award in Environmental Governance in 2016 from the University of the Philippines Board of Regents. Dr. delos Reyes earned his Doctoral degree in Natural Science (Dr.rer.nat.) at the University of Hamburg in Germany.
Presentation Abstract: Geoparks face unique environmental, social, economic, and infrastructural challenges due to natural and human-induced threats, making resilience a crucial component of their management planning. This work explores strategies for building resilience within geopark management frameworks to support sustainable regional development. Through the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark case study, incorporating adaptive management, risk assessment, community involvement, and biodiversity conservation were analyzed to strengthen geopark resilience. An integrated resilience-oriented approach enhances a geopark’s ability to withstand disruptions, preserving its natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
