“Promoting Landscape-scale Perspectives for Local SDG Problem-Solving in the Philippines”: UPRI Presented at Future Earth Asia Webinar

On April 17, 2024, University of the Philippines Resilience Institute (UPRI) was invited to give a presentation on the webinar organized by Future Earth Asia entitled: “Systems Thinking for Systemic Goals: Why Frameworks and Scales Matter”. UPRI Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay shares his expertise on the matter with a presentation on: “Promoting Landscape-scale Perspectives for Local SDG Problem-Solving in the Philippines”. The Landscape Scale links people and place for a holistic understanding that is more than just the visual and aesthetic factors of the landscape, but it is a result of the complex interactions of natural factors, cultural factors, and perceptual and aesthetic qualities. In the context of resilience, ecosystem-based approaches or strategies will be needed to mitigate the effects of climate change, with a wide range of management activities that help increase the resilience and reduce the vulnerability of people and the environment. Ecosystem based systems will take into account the different types of environment each community finds itself in. It is also important to note that Development Plans must be risk-informed through the use of resources such as expert opinion-based susceptibility maps. The UP framework is to see UP as a public service university. They aim to empower key actors across all sectors in formulating risk-informed development plans. This is supported through science-based policies that are locally researched, instead of relying solely on international research. These are supported through the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund.
