On March 15 2024, the UPRI was brought to provide perspective on the technical side of the issue for Teleradyo Serbisyo’s Gising Pilipinas with Alvin Elchico and Doris Bigornia. The issue in question is about a resort called The Captain’s Peak Garden and Resort situated in the Chocolate Hills of Bohol and its resulting closure. As a background to the recent events, Bohol island, including the Chocolate Hills, was declared a UNESCO Global Geopark in the Philippines, the first of its kind in the country, and as part of this acknowledgement requires the conservation and protection of its unique geological heritage. Dr. Mahar Lagmay was on hand to provide his expertise as a geologist on the possible effects of a resort in a global geopark. There is also an aesthetic element to the decision of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, as the presence of a resort would not fit in with the natural beauty of the Chocolate Hills. The presence of anthropogenic activities close to the Hills is also bound to have an environmental impact. It was also advised to wait for the situation to develop as it is still too early to fully weigh in.
