Training of Trainers for “Stop the Bleed”

Every minute counts. For every five minutes of idle time at the occurrence of bleeding emergencies the mortality rate increases by 40%. This doubles for every five minutes of idle time that passes by. Common causes of life threatening blood loss can come from gunshot wounds, impalement and traumatic injuries involving weapons to name a few. It is one of the fastest causes of death. Thus, we have to Stop the Bleed!

In lieu of service, UP Resilience Institute (UPRI) through the Institution Building Division conducted a capacity development training entitled Training of Trainers “Stop the Bleed” on April 28, 2025 at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). The said training was participated by 20 volunteers from the different divisions in UPRI. The training aimed to spread the knowledge on “Stop the Bleed” and increase the number of personnel capable to control or manage life threatening blood loss in times of bleeding emergencies.

Moreover, Dr. Yap emphasized the steps that needs to be taken to stop the bleed. Starting from alerting of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and surveying of the area ensuring the safety of both the patient and responder. Furthermore, the actual techniques in stopping blood loss namely application of direct pressure, packing the wound and re-application of direct pressure and the proper use of tourniquet was demonstrated.
