Resilience Live Episode 3 – Sustainable Coastal Engineering
Air Date: October 26, 2023
Engr. John Phillip Lapidez presented a case study on sustainable coastal development in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. The study showcased the application of a Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) to evaluate reclamation projects and associated developments. Engr. Lapidez emphasized the importance of establishing baseline environmental conditions and identifying key strategic issues through stakeholder consultations and coastal and marine modeling. The REA process enabled the Indonesian government to regulate coastal developments more effectively, setting a precedent for improved environmental governance and attracting interest from developers across Southeast Asia. The session concluded with a discussion on the potential relevance of these methodologies to ongoing reclamation efforts in Manila Bay, underscoring the value of science-based, transdisciplinary approaches in sustainable coastal engineering.
