UPRI Conducts a Preliminary Engagement Meeting with the College of Human Kinetics for the Emergency Preparedness Plan

In a pivotal meeting held on May 22, 2024, representatives from the UP Resilience Institute (UPRI) and the College of Human Kinetics (CHK) convened to strategize on enhancing CHK’s Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP). UPRI, prominently represented by Jose Abraham Ongkiko, Chief Science Research Specialist, and assisted by Jerzyne Anne Corpuz, Junior Project Assistant, and Jonathan David Maligalig, Junior Project Assistant, led the discussions. The meeting brought together key officials from both institutions to discuss and plan crucial steps for improving safety and preparedness at UP Diliman.

The discussion began with an overview of CHK’s existing Emergency Action Plan (EAP). CHK’s Admin Officer, James Lester Edrozo, highlighted the need for UPRI’s expertise to review and enhance their current plan. Chief Science Research Specialist Jose Abraham Ongkiko emphasized the importance of conducting a rapid assessment to validate hazards and improve the emergency plans. This assessment, scheduled for June 10, 2024, is crucial for tailoring the EPP to address the specific needs and potential hazards of CHK.

The meeting also focused on the logistics and responsibilities for the EPP training. CHK will handle the scheduling, venue, and provision of meals and snacks for participants, while UPRI will provide resource persons and training materials. The EPP training is expected to involve around 40 participants and will likely be held at the Varsity Training Center. The plan is to hold the training in July, pending confirmation of the academic calendar.

A significant part of the discussion was dedicated to addressing security concerns, particularly the potential for threats during major sports events. Asst. Prof. Norberto R. Madrigal, CHK’s Associate Dean, stressed the importance of including threat assessments in the EPP to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators. The tailored EPP will specifically address the unique challenges faced by CHK, especially with UP Diliman hosting the upcoming UAAP season.

The meeting concluded with a clear path forward: conducting the rapid assessment on June 10, 2024, and preparing for the comprehensive EPP training in July. This collaboration between UPRI and CHK marks a significant step towards bolstering emergency preparedness at UP Diliman, ensuring a safer environment for students, faculty, and visitors.
