A New AI Model Guides Proactive, Anticipatory Action for Volcanic Hazards

February 2, 2026 — What happens when veterinary science combines with volcanology? The UP Resilience Institute’s Research and Creative Works Division (UP RI-RCW), under the direction of Dr. Dj Darwin Bandoy, has created a groundbreaking tool: an AI-powered volcano risk model.

This model employs artificial intelligence and impact-based scenarios to simulate volcanic hazards. It is designed for anticipatory action, enabling researchers and disaster response teams to accurately identify the optimal amount of resources required to mitigate the effects of volcanic hazards. With this tool, disaster response teams can take proactive measures, reducing both human and economic losses.

This project demonstrates how interdisciplinary approaches can lead to innovative and practical solutions for complex challenges. It aids in improving planning and preparedness in communities at risk from volcanic activity. The RCW team remains dedicated to applied research and tool development that supports evidence-based disaster risk management initiatives in the Philippines.
