Be Ready, Save a Life: UPRI’s Mass CPR Training with ZOLL AEDs

The UP Resilience Institute – Institution Building Division, in collaboration with Sy Medical Trading Corporation and using materials from ZOLL Medical, conducted a Mass CPR Training on April 14, 2025. Representatives Mr. Gelon Colladilla and Mr. Jonie emphasized the importance of life-saving equipment, particularly ZOLL Medical’s Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). The session aimed to raise awareness about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and the critical role that high-quality CPR and AEDs play in improving survival outcomes.

Sir Gelon opened the session with a comprehensive overview of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, distinguishing it from a heart attack and stressing the urgent need for immediate intervention. He emphasized that every minute without CPR reduces a victim’s chance of survival, as blood and oxygen are not delivered to the brain and heart.

Participants were introduced to the ZOLL AED Plus, with a demonstration of its functions and usability. The device features intuitive function buttons and clear instructions, making it user-friendly for both trained and untrained responders. The team also discussed its potential for use on children, with Sir Gelon recommending the AED 3 model for schools, which allows options tailored to both adults and younger individuals.

Following the orientation, the group participated in a hands-on simulation, allowing them to test out the device in a realistic CPR scenario. Participants practiced delivering high-quality chest compressions combined with the use of the AED, learning how the device guides rescuers through audio and visual prompts to ensure effective defibrillation. Mr. Gelon underscored the importance of accessibility, stating that AEDs should be used within four minutes of a cardiac event for the best chance of survival.

Through the collaborative efforts of the UP Resilience Institute – Institution Building Division and Sy Medical Trading Corporation, participants gained not only technical skills in administering CPR and using an AED but also a deeper understanding of the urgency and importance of immediate response during cardiac emergencies.
