Behind the Science Podcast: Rock fractures in the geothermal reservoir of Southern Negros

Episode 56 of the Behind the Science Podcast features Dr. Loraine Pastoriza Primaleon, a geologist whose research focuses on rock fractures in geothermal reservoirs, particularly in Southern Negros. In this episode, she shares her insights on the complexities of geothermal systems and the challenges she faced in her research.

Dr. Primaleon is a licensed geologist with a PhD in structural geology, with a particular interest in deformation history of brittle structures in volcano-hosted geothermal fields and earthquake resilience. Initially aspiring to be an artist or a lawyer, she discovered her passion for geology later in her academic journey. This unexpected shift ultimately led her to specialize in geothermal research, where she now contributes valuable insights into fracture systems and reservoir dynamics. Currently, she is leading the field development planning of the Tongonan Geothermal Field with the Energy Development Corporation.

On the left is Ms. Drew Carrillo, a geologist with an MSc in Marine Science and the host of the Behind the Science Podcast. On the right is Dr. Loraine Pastoriza Primaleon, a licensed geologist and a Field Development Planner at the Energy Development Corporation.

A key focus of Dr. Primaleon’s study is the behavior of fracture systems at varying scales within geothermal reservoirs. Understanding these fractures is crucial, as they influence permeability and water retention—two essential factors in the efficiency of geothermal energy extraction. By employing advanced techniques such as LiDAr and satellite imaging, her research provides a detailed analysis of fracture patterns, aiding in better predictions of subsurface behavior.

Dr. Primaleon underscores the importance of bridging the gap between academic research and industry applications. She highlights the need for collaboration to advance geothermal studies, ensuring that research findings translate into practical improvements in energy exploration and production.

Beyond her research, Dr. Primaleon encourages aspiring geologists and researchers to remain open to unexpected opportunities. Her journey exemplifies how curiosity and adaptability can lead to groundbreaking discoveries in the field.
