NUS College Students Engage in Learning Visit at UP Resilience Institute

Undergraduate students from the National University of Singapore College (NUSC) visited the University of the Philippines Resilience Institute (UPRI) on June 2–3, 2025, as part of their Global Experience (GEx) course titled “Disaster Resilience and Climate Adaptation.”

The visit, organized in coordination with UPRI’s Education Division, included lectures and collaborative sessions focused on disaster resilience, citizen science, and sustainable development in the Philippine context. The students were welcomed by Richard Ybañez, Chief Science Research Specialist of the Education Division, and Feye Andal, Mentor of the UPRI YouthMappers, who led discussions on resilience thinking in the Philippines and the role of youth in DRR-CCA initiatives.

After the introductions, each UPRI division presented their respective programs and activities. This was followed by a tour of the UP NOAH Center and an open house, where students were free to visit each UPRI division’s office to learn more about their initiatives in greater detail.

This visit is part of the inaugural GEx Manila–Tacloban course led by Dr. Shelley Tuazon Guyton. The course explores how individuals and institutions in the Philippines understand and respond to disasters and the impacts of climate change. Through engagements in both Metro Manila and Tacloban City, students interact with academic, government, and community-based partners to learn about inequality, inclusion, and local adaptation practices in disaster risk reduction.

UPRI’s participation supports the broader goals of the Global Experience Program by offering context-specific, interdisciplinary learning that deepens students’ understanding of climate and disaster resilience across diverse urban and regional settings.
