The Research and Creative Work (RCW) Division of the UP Resilience Institute (UPRI) conducted field research in the Badjaoan community of Brgy. Malitam and Wawa, Batangas City, Batangas last July 4-8, 2024. The target respondents are members of the Badjao community who relocated due to climate change, disasters, and complex factors. The team is composed of Junior Project Assistants For. Alexa Samantha R. Hernandez and Mape Estellena, Community Affairs Officer John Carlos Quijano, and Researchers Youngsun Noh and Yehwan Park from Ewha Womans University, South Korea.
The UPRI team mainly facilitated the data-gathering implementation of the quantitative survey while the researchers from Ewha Womans University conducted focus group discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews (KII), and in-depth interviews (IDI) with a total of 152 participants. During the data collection, RCW Director Prof. Glecy C. Atienza also joined the team.
The data gathering implementation in Batangas is a part of the study entitled “A Study on Assessing the Vulnerability of Climate-induced Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Developing a Project Model for Strengthening Resilience, Philippines.” This research aims to assess the vulnerabilities of the Filipino IDP community in two relocation areas, Tacloban City and Batangas City, particularly with a focus on climate impacts on livelihood, health, and social capital. Based on the key findings, a project model for strengthening community climate resilience will be suggested.
The project is funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency and in collaboration with UPRI, the Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation, Inc. (PARRFI), and Ewha Womans University.
