UP RI conducted a lecture on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) for NSTP students at UP Los Banos

 

On February 26, 2024, Mr. Jose Abraham C. Ongkiko, Chief Science Research Specialist from UP Resilience Institute (UP RI)-Institution Building Division (IB), shared his knowledge and experiences in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) with the National Service Training Program (NSTP) at UP Los Baños.

There were 807 participants, including students and faculty (morning and afternoon sessions), who attended the lecture. The DRRM module is a part of the NSTP Common Module this module is aimed to provide basic knowledge, terminologies, and actual scenarios on DRRM. The module is divided into four (4) lectures: a review of hazards and disaster concepts, the Philippine risk profile, DRRM frameworks, and policies. Mr. Ongkiko discussed the importance of emergency readiness and family evacuation plans.

Moving forward, the students were required to develop their emergency resilience plans with their assigned group in the final module. The purpose of the module was to provide students with the ability to anticipate emergencies and devise plans of action.
