On May 20, the UP Resilience Institute YouthMappers (UPRIYM) kicked off the first session of JOSM Validation training designed to enhance our volunteers’ mapping skills. This event, facilitated by our resident trainer, Ceejay Abilay, marks a significant milestone in the YouthMappers Asia UpSkilling Series, aiming to enrich the YouthMappers members’ experiences as dedicated mappers.
Java OpenStreetMap (JOSM) is a powerful tool mappers use to contribute detailed and accurate data to the OpenStreetMap (OSM) platform. The validation process in JOSM is crucial as it ensures the accuracy and reliability of the data entered. During our training session, we delved into various validation techniques, learning how to identify and correct errors using the built-in JOSM validation tools, maintain data quality, and ensure our contributions are valuable to the global OSM community.
Drawing inspiration from the YouthMappers Regional Validation Hub: Philippine camp hosted by Feye Andal, Ceejay completed the program and brought his newfound knowledge back to share with his home chapter at UPRIYM. The training began with a discussion on the significance of data quality, followed by hands-on exercises that allowed us to practice validation in real time. Ceejay’s interactive approach ensured that everyone, from beginners to experienced mappers, could grasp and apply the concepts effectively.
The first JOSM Validation training session was more than just a learning experience; it also shows our dedication to improving our skills as mappers in the open data community, thereby positively impacting the community. As we move forward with the YouthMappers Asia UpSkilling Series, we are excited to develop our abilities further and make more significant contributions to the OSM community.
