Soaring to New Heights: UPRI YouthMappers’ First Drone Training

Our mission as UPRI YouthMappers revolves around empowering communities to build resilience in disasters. To turn this vision into a reality, we’ve tapped into the extensive resources available through our parent organization, UPRI, and joined the recently launched YouthMappers UpSkilling Series. And what better way to kickstart this journey than by immersing ourselves in the world of drone technology?

Drones have emerged as innovative tools in disaster management and community resilience. These small yet mighty aerial vehicles offer versatility in their applications, including aerial surveys, search and rescue, damage assessment, and community mapping. For us, images captured by drones are instrumental in creating precise geospatial data that are valuable for disaster preparedness and response.

Our drone training was an immersive experience led by Miss Leigh Lunas, an experienced and licensed drone pilot, and trainer from OSM-Philippines. During the 2-day training sessions held last September 30 and October 4, 2023, at the UP Resilience Institute Training Room, our participants delved into various theoretical aspects, including drone components, Philippine Air Laws, and Drone Safety Maintenance. Beyond theory, the hands-on drone flying sessions during the second day of the training enabled our students to put their newfound knowledge into practice and perfect drone flying techniques.

At UPRI YouthMappers, our goal extends beyond skill acquisition – making a positive impact. This drone training activity equips us to speed up disaster response, enhance damage assessments, and help create detailed community maps.

Our drone training is just the beginning for us. The internal UpSkilling Series is a dynamic initiative designed to adapt to our chapter members’ unique needs and aspirations. We can’t wait to share the next chapters of this exciting journey.

Watch out for more updates on our upcoming projects and training sessions on Facebook and X (Twitter). We’re ready to take flight and embrace the challenges ahead, steering our communities toward a brighter, more resilient future.
