The rerun of the free and massive open online course (MOOC) for Basics of Resilience (June 17 – July 19, 2024), a collaborative program by the UP Resilience Institute (UP RI) and UP Open University—Faculty of Management and Development Studies (UPOU—FMDS) had attained 2681 participants, of whom 693 completed the course. These results reflect the continued commitment of the institutions to accomplish its program’s goal—reaching individuals nationwide, regardless of sociodemographic status, to be well-informed and capable in mitigating and adapting to the pressing issues and impacts of climate change through a wider access to online education.
The online modality facilitates flexible learning, accessing DRR and CCAM education for everyone at their convenience. In the rerun of MOOC 1, the enrollees are 77.6% employed full-time, 10.1% employed, 4.8% student, 4.6% employed part-time, and 2.9% self-employed. This participation highlights the interest of different individuals across the country to be involved in resilience—building activities, signifying the urgency to expand the reach of this online course in the succeeding offerings.
To have valuable insights regarding overall experience of the MOOC, here are some of the learners’ testimonials:

Here’s what some of the course participants from previous offering of MOOC 1 say about their experience:
With learners coming from diverse backgrounds, UP RI and UPOU-FMDS are optimistic that this course prepared them with basic learning competencies and improved their prior knowledge on DRR and CCAM, to be assets in serving their local communities in times of disasters through appropriate, integrative, and holistic initiatives.
Last August 27, the third run of MOOC 1 Basics of Resilience, together with the new course, MOOC 2 Hazard Assessment, Risk Parameters, and Framework and Policies on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) – Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) were officially launched. These are self-paced, free, and offered through UPOU’s Open and Distance Learning modality, providing the participants the opportunity to obtain specific units, which can be credited towards a UP Master’s Degree in Resilience through micro-credentialing roadmap developed by UPOU.
