UP Resilience Institute Successfully Hosts Publishing Workshop

 

The UP Resilience Institute, in collaboration with the UP System Office of International Linkages, hosted a highly informative and well-attended Publishing Workshop. The highly reputable resource speaker was Dr. Bruce D. Malamud, Director of the Durham University Institute of Hazard, Risk, and Resilience, Wilson Chair on Hazard and Risk, and Executive Editor of Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS). The event provided invaluable insights into the peer-review process for both early-career researchers and seasoned scholars. This was held on September 30, 2024 at the Melchor Hall Theatre, UP College of Engineering.

Drawing on over 20 years of experience in academic publishing, Dr. Malamud shared valuable key tips on what editors value in manuscript submissions and the common pitfalls authors should avoid. His practical advice on navigating the complexities of peer review resonated with the attendees, many of whom were early career researchers from widely varying fields gained better understanding of how to increase their chances of getting their research published.

A notable highlight of the workshop was Dr. Malamud’s discussion of systematic and critical literature reviews. He emphasized the importance of these reviews in shaping a robust understanding of research topics, showcasing examples where well-executed reviews resulted in higher citation rates and broader practical application within the academic community. Attendees appreciated his real-world examples, which demonstrated the impact such reviews can have when done effectively.

In addition to exploring the peer-review process and manuscript preparation, Dr. Malamud addressed emerging trends in academic publishing, including the use of Artificial Intelligence in research workflows. His thoughts on how AI can enhance systematic literature mapping sparked engaging discussions during the Q&A session given a limited time constraint.
