The UP Resilience Institute (UPRI), in collaboration with the UP National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP NCPAG) and the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO), hosted the ‘Sanay Agap Iglap Pagsasanay’ seminar on August 29-30, 2024. The event aimed to enhance emergency preparedness among faculty and staff.
UPRI was represented by Jose Abraham C. Ongkiko, Chief Science Research Specialist, and Junior Project Assistants Jerzyne Anne A. Corpuz, Franklin Joshua G. Gali, and Jonathan David M. Maligalig.
The highlight of the first day was an afternoon lecture and training by QCDRRMO, led by Rainier Ting with assistance from Rose San Alvarez. Participants learned about the Pacific Ring of Fire, the East and West Valley Faults, and essential safety protocols like “Drop, Cover, and Hold.” Emphasis was placed on identifying safe spots, knowing emergency exits, and keeping a list of emergency numbers, now updated to 911.
The session also covered the creation of a comprehensive survival kit and an everyday “Go Bag,” along with an introduction to first aid skills. Key topics included injury assessment, wound care, fracture management, and emergency transfer methods, such as the fireman’s carry and blanket drag. At the end of the session, each participant received a “Go Bag” packed with essential items, courtesy of QCDRRMO.
On the second day, participants engaged in a surprise fire drill, practicing the use of fire extinguishers to combat potential office fires. The drill allowed participants to apply their newly acquired skills in a real-world scenario.
Dean Kristofer B. Berse was present throughout the training and gave closing remarks before introducing QCDRRMO Officer-in-Charge Bianca Perez, who also shared her thoughts on the event’s success.
The event was a successful collaboration between UPRI and QCDRRMO, demonstrating a shared commitment to building a culture of safety and resilience at UP NCPAG.
