As part of Philippine Space Week 2024, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) invited partner organizations and institutions, including the UP Resilience Institute (UPRI), to the launch of the Space Data Dashboard (SDD) on August 9, 2024.
PhilSA’s initiative aims to democratize space data by providing satellite-derived information to institutions and citizens alike through the SDD. This groundbreaking platform allows broader access to satellite data, hence, expanding opportunities for research and innovation across various fields, from disaster preparedness to environmental monitoring.
Denis Villorente, Deputy Director General of Space Operations, Infrastructure, and Industry at PhilSA, explained that the SDD is set to reshape access and use of space data. By offering a centralized resource for accurate, near real-time information from space, it empowers stakeholders—from government institutions and LGUs to researchers, the private sector, and the general public—to make informed, data-driven decisions.
The work of UPRI’s Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (NOAH) program aligns closely with PhilSA’s mission. By utilizing satellite data to assess, monitor, and predict hazards, UPRI aims to prevent and mitigate disaster impacts. The access PhilSA provides to localized satellite data is invaluable to UPRI’s resilience-building efforts, thereby enhancing the Institute’s capacity to support communities across the nation on climate and disaster resilience.
