The University of the Philippines Resilience Institute (UPRI) welcomed 45 student interns who will be exposed to actual and operational work related to disaster risk reduction and management and climate science on Monday, July 13.
The interns have backgrounds in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, mass communication, and public administration, among others, and are from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Mindanao, and Mariano Marcos State University.

Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco Lagmay, UPRI Executive Director, emphasized during the opening program the multidisciplinary and multisectoral nature of disaster risk reduction, hence the importance of having interns from various disciplines. “Noong nagkaroon ng COVID-19, tinamaan and edukasyon, tinamaan ang transport sector, tinamaan ang lahat ng sektor. When you talk about resilience, kailangan ng planning… and when you plan, kailangan ng expertise from different fields.”

This is the third time that the UPRI has taken in students for a one-month internship program. Unlike the previous years, this year’s batch of interns may report onsite.
Through the program, the interns will learn about the functions of the five UPRI divisions, namely Education, Institution Building, Research and Creative Work, Knowledge Sharing, and the NOAH Center. Engineering student interns assigned to the NOAH Center will work for either the WebGIS Development Team, the Planning Component, or the Hazard Assessment Team.

The internship program is part of UPRI’s academic support initiatives through the Education Division.
