January 29, 2026 —The UP Resilience Institute – Research and Creative Work Division (UPRI-RCW) conducted the CORD Strategic Writing and Planning Workshop, bringing together its staff under the guidance of its director, Dr. DJ Darwin Bandoy, at the Gazebo, University Hotel. The workshop was held as part of the Center for Climate and Health glObal Research on Disasters (CORD) Project, a collaborative initiative of universities from climate-vulnerable regions in Africa and Asia, coordinated by Tufts University in the United States. The CORD Project supports research and case studies that strengthen anticipatory action before disasters, with a focus on protecting health and advancing health equity in climate-affected communities.
The workshop provided a dedicated space for the RCW team to refine writing practices, align objectives, and explore strategies for more effective communication. Through research-based tools and guided activities, everyone was encouraged to enhance clarity, coherence, and purpose in both research and institutional writing, while actively engaging in collaborative planning across the division to strengthen effective communications internally and externally. The first part of the workshop focused on discussions on CORD deliverables and ways forward, administrative and finance matters, and team transitions. These sessions ensured alignment across the division on priorities, responsibilities, and operational workflows.

A simulation of Complete Staff Work (CSW) was also conducted, allowing staff to engage in critical thinking, apply their skills and judgment in performing tasks, and explore decision-making within their roles. This exercise not only assessed coordination mechanisms but also empowered staff to take ownership of responsibilities, fostering confidence and initiative in their work. The team then discussed the formation of committees for the division’s core components. The exercise highlighted the importance of clear roles, collaborative decision-making, and smooth task distribution to ensure CORD initiatives are carried out effectively. At the same time, it strengthened internal systems and work dynamics, creating structures and practices that staff can rely on and build upon moving forward.
The second part of the workshop centered on planning for the division’s expanding portfolio of projects in 2026, including discussions on staffing requirements and timelines in anticipation of increased programmatic activities. The team also discussed plans for a culminating event and reviewed the CORD Project timeline, aligning key milestones with project objectives and available resources to ensure cohesive and timely implementation. Through these sessions, the workshop became more than a planning exercise. It provided a space for staff to sharpen their skills, exercise judgment, and contribute meaningfully to the division’s evolving initiatives. With thoughtful preparation, collaborative engagement, and proactive participation, the UPRI-RCW continues to build a culture of excellence and readiness, equipping the office to meet current challenges and future opportunities with confidence.
