The UP extension campus in Koronadal opened in June 2011 by the combined efforts of the provincial government of South Cotabato and the UP System administration. It is the first health science unit in Mindanao established by UP Manila and the second campus in the island under the UP system. It is also the third extension campus of UP Manila’s School of Health Sciences. The campus accepts students from the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, North Cotabato, and the Autonomous Region and Muslim Mindanao (Minda News, 2014).
A ladderized scheme is adapted for the health science curriculum that starts scholars with a certificate program on community health work and then they can proceed to BS Nursing or Doctor of Medicine. The campus trains midwives, nurses, and doctors to serve the depressed and underserved areas in the Philippines. The first batch of the midwifery graduates achieved 100% passing rate for the Midwife Licensure Examination in November 2012 with two of its graduates landed on the Top 10 (South Cotabato News, 2015).
