UP Resilience Institute – Research and Creative Work Division launched “Panahon Na!” a social media campaign on February 29, 2024. A short program was held at the UPRI Training Room and simultaneously broadcast online via Facebook Live. At the center of the campaign is a multimedia comic series entitled “Si K! Ang Kaibigan Ko”.
UPRI Executive Director Alfredo Mahar Francisco Lagmay showed his support for the project by giving an opening message, saying “This 2024, it is high time for every Filipino to have a more meaningful understanding of climate change and the natural hazard phenomena that it aggravates.”
He reiterated the call of Panahon Na!, adding “Panahon na para bigyan ng atensyon ang siyensiya para tayo’y maging handa sa bangis ng kalamidad.”
Dr. Likha Minimo, Director of the UPRI Knowledge Sharing Division, also expressed her support and highlighted the use of creativity to popularize scientific knowledge to capture the interest and attention of the younger generation.
Dr. Glecy C. Atienza, Director of Research and Creative Work, also shared a message introducing the rationale behind “Panahon Na!”. The goal is to share simple, correct, and accurate information about weather phenomena and their effect on people’s lives. “Panahon Na!” is a call for immediate action to respond to the changes brought about by climate change.
“Panahon Na!” is the result of the efforts of Project Lead Dr. Atienza, with visuals by Mape Estellana and Chris Sanchez, and the storyline and narratives by Arman Mangilinan and Kyrios Concordia. The team members shared their thoughts about the project’s processes and goals.
They then introduced the characters and premise of “Si K! Ang Kaibigan Ko”, shared a preview of the first episode, and introduced other types of content to be released. New episodes and other content will be released weekly on the Facebook page. This project is part of the Inn Lab na Tayo Program, a pitch for interdisciplinary innovation by the UP Resilience Institute’s Research and Creative Work.
